Setting and Tracking Effective Goals - Guest post by Adam Jelic from Mi Goals.. While we all have good thoughts and intentions, it’s plans and actions that create results and turn dreams into reality.. As a planner, it’s up to you to use goal setting as a tool to drive and guide these plans and actions.. To quote the great basketballer Michael Jordan, “I approach everything step by step… I have always set goals.. ”.. How can you approach goal setting?.. The first step is to critically assess your goals.. That is, are your goals:.. Realistic: can they be achieved? (never stop dreaming big, but do be realistic).. Compelling: will you wake up every morning motivated to achieve these goals?.. Tied to your values and beliefs: are they tied to your inner self and what you believe in?.. These are the core factors that are the difference between setting goals for the sake of it versus setting goals that you are driven to achieve.. Once you’ve assessed and set your goals, it’s important to record and track them regularly as you progress.. Why?.. The human brain produces as many as 12,000 - 50,000 thoughts a day (no wonder some people feel overwhelmed!), so writing your goals down regularly will help achieve clarity and focus on your objectives and the tasks at hand.. How can you track goals effectively?.. Begin by recording your goals daily.. Getting into this habit will ensure that you stay focused on your plan.. Motivation is what gets you started; habits are what keep you going.. Another tactic is to keep your goals visible when you work and always question what you’re doing.. This will help remove clutter and distractions in your work, map your progress, and increase efficiency so that each task you undertake works towards your goals.. During this process, you should immerse yourself in the full experience.. By approaching each day as an opportunity to take one step forward, you and your plan will continue to grow.. You may not get there today, but you’ll be one step closer today than you were yesterday.. Life is short, so whatever it is that you want to do, I encourage you to go out there and give it your all.. Although the idea of goal setting sounds quite simple, the journey towards achieving your goals can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences.. Dream big!.. About Adam Jelic:..
